I suppose one word that springs to mind to describe Phil is 'craftsman'; Phil's creations, whether they be drums, rattles or spirit bags, are all beautifully crafted with a great deal or care, workmanship and artistic skill. The icing on the cake, though, is the fact that Phil's creations are each made with the right intention: Phil works in a wholly shamanic way - there's no sense of mass-production here; he works with spirit throughout the creative process - he thanks the spirit of the creatures used in the making of each piece and works with specific knowledge of the reason for the crafting of each item.
ReplyDeleteThe spirit bag that Phil gifted me is both beautiful and useful, but it is the fact that when it was made it was done so not in an off-hand fashion but with care and spirit that make it a very special thing to me; it feels like a talisman in the original sense of the word - it feels magical, blessed. It is also unique - I know that there's no other out there like it.
